Kathmandu, and particularly the tourist area Thamel, has a large variety of Western food, shopping, guest houses and Internet cafes, however even this can have an old world feel with its labyrinth of small restaurants and shops. A feeling that increases hen the area is plunged into darkness by scheduled daily power outages.

Thamel is the main hotel, shopping and Entertainment district of Kathmandu. This is the area where most of the hotels located mostly budget hotels and also it is one of the places where you can find mountaneering, Camping and trekking gears on rent or purchase. There are about hundred hotels located in Thamel. Recently lots of restaurants and dancing bars have also come up, where Nepalese youth spend their evenings.

Thamel area has recently emerged as the most popular tourist area of Kathmandu. Thamel is a 15 to 20 minute walk from the center of Kathmandu. Thamel has clean narrow streets full of mushrooming lodges, hotels for budget travellers. Restaurants, bars and other tourist oriented shops can be seen bustling with activities.

Thamel starts in the south at a little place called Tahiti Tole. In the west you find the main street Kantipath, where the standard tourist buses to Pokhara start early in the morning .

On Tridevi Marg is the Nepali “shopping mall” Sanchaya Kosh building. Here you can find the ACAP office and get your ACAP entry permit, which you need for trekking in the Annapurna region. The office is closed on Saturdays.

All the other shops are open till the evening seven days a week.
